The CHAMPS are here!!! The LCN JV Boys’ Basketball team played two very hard fought games over Christmas break in the Crusader Classic that was held at the High School. In both games the feisty Crusader team held double digit deficits in the second half, but refused to cave in and were able to claw their way back into both games and come out on top! In the first game of the tournament last Thursday (12/27/2018), LCN took on Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. OLSM definitely had the size advantage over the JV team, but that did not make the LCN team back down. OLSM held a 12 point lead with 3:30 left in the third quarter, but the JV Boys’ dug in and refused to go down without a fight. LCN chipped away at the lead led by Jemari Mack (18 points) and Vinny Longo (13 points) and were able to come out on top 59-57, outscoring OLSM 23-13 in the final quarter. Chuckie Riley brought a spark off the bench with some crucial defensive plays down the stretch in the fourth quarter.
With the win, LCN advanced onto the Championship game against Grosse Pointe North, who defeated Warren Woods Tower in their Semi-Final game. GPN came out playing a 2-3 zone which stifled the LCN team for much of the game until LCN turned up the pressure. LCN trailed 28-22 at the half and was down as many as 13 points in the third quarter. Once again, LCN’s resiliency was on full display as they refused to give up, clawing their way back into the game for a back and forth final quarter and overtime. A huge second half by Jemari Mack helped spark the comeback. Mack, sophomore, scored 19 of his team high 24 points in the second half and overtime. Longo and Michael Caverly contributed on the offensive end as well, combining for 15 points. The Championship game was won on the defensive end though, with major contributions from Nick Bologna and Nick Rosado. Bologna had 3 huge blocks around the rim to keep GPN at bay and keep LCN in the game. Rosado had a big test against the GPN big guy and battled him throughout the whole game, playing physical and rebounding.
Both, OLSM and GPN, are top tier programs around the area and LCN played with the best of them and was able to come out on top. Both wins were complete team efforts. The team stuck together and refused to go down swinging. With the two wins in the Crusader Classic, the LCN JV Boys’ Basketball team has moved to 6-1 overall. Go Crusaders!
